It’s showtime (again)! Me and my pop art pups, cats, birds and bunnies were at Melbourne’s newest pet exhibition — The Pet Show. This two day event was held at the Melbourne Showgrounds and it was great to be back at an event so soon after last year’s Dog Lovers Show.

Again, my mini pet portraits were the stars of the show, it was lovely to hand-deliver some pre ordered ones, plus book in many more throughout the weekend. Check our my Instagram for the latest art.

Here’s a few highlights from the weekend, enjoy!

Set Up Day

Here’s my blank canvas of a stand transformed into a colourful pop art delight. I had a great location looking onto the dog arena so expected to see lots of talented pups across the weekend. *Spoiler alert* I was not disappointed. I’ve had stacks of mini portraits on display — I actually couldn’t believe how many I’ve done since I launched them a few months ago — plus my larger canvas and art prints. But there was something I forgot to bring.. the hand painted portrait of my dog Buddy! I kept a spot free for it and added him to my display the next morning. Sorry Budd haha!

Day 1: Saturday

The first day of The Pet Show certainly lived up to the hype and a huge thank you to everyone who dropped by my display to pick up, book in or enquire about a pet portrait! I can’t wait to create more beautiful pet art.

Big thanks to my special guest @mangoandbo it was awesome to hang out with them for the day. We all love Mango, (he sure got lots of cuddles) and glad Mango and his dad Bo had a fun time, I appreciate all their help.

I also got special visits from the delightful @skippinggirl_shihtzus and even scored a boop on the nose from Indi. Their beautiful new pop portrait is looking amazing in my display. I made some new Frenchie friends, Ivy and Fudge from @ivy.prada.pearly sisters. They wandered over from their spot at the French Bulldogs Club stand to say hello and pose with their portraits too.

Day 2: Sunday

Another wonderful day at The Pet Show for day 2 of the show! I got to see my fave Shih Tzu friends and talk to everyone about their wonderful pets. Special thanks to those who booked in a portrait — now that the show is over, the artwork begins! Looking forward to creating more pop art illustrations of some super cool pets.

So many special moments, thank you to Indi and Maggie from @skippinggirl_shihtzus for stopping by again. These pop art princesses drew such a crowd that they turned my display into an impromptu photo booth! And I’m so honoured to receive a nose boop from Indi — a moment I will treasure, love these beautiful pups.

My mate @presley.shih.tzu popped by with his family too. It wouldn’t be a show without beanbag fun with Presley, he’s such a legend and has the most winning smile!

Abi from Abi B Photography also stopped by and (being the absolute pro that she is) took an amazing photo of me with the artwork of her pup Abe. Oh did you see Abi’s top tips for pet photography? You should check those out. I also got cuddles with a Japanese Spitz puppy, and some end of day belly rubs with Ivy, perfect ending to a great show.

It’s a big weekend, specially for the pups, and I really appreciate all the visits from everyone who attended the event!

All pet portraits start with a photo of your pup. Taking great photos of your dog can be tricky though, if your phone is anything like mine it’s a scroll through hundreds of puppy pics to find the stand out shot. Getting a photo for your pet portrait doesn’t have to be daunting though — it’s actually rather fun and a great way to bond with your dog.

Luckily for us, I’ve teamed up with professional pet photographer Abi from Abi B Photography who offers beautiful (and stress-free) pet portrait studio sessions in the comfort of your own home.

Abraham the Weimaraner by Abi B Photography

Abi has let us know her best (and easy) tips for taking the perfect photos of your dog, that you can follow using just your phone camera, no fancy gear required. Just check out her beautiful work and try some of these easy tips when you next want to capture a photo of your dog.

1. Check what’s in the background

Make your dog the focal point of your photos by removing anything that could be distracting from the background. Quickly scan for things on the ground that can easily be moved, or anything particularly eye-catching behind your pet that you can keep out of frame. Your dog needs to be the centre of attention at all times of course.

2. Get down low

Taking photos from your pet’s eye level creates an engaging shot. Sit down with your dog and have your phone camera positioned level with their eyes, this gives you the perfect front-on view that makes for an amazing portrait.

3. Use treats, toys and noises

When your pet looks straight at the camera or phone, there’s a beautiful connection. Their favourite squeaky toy, a yummy treat and/or your voice can be a great way to get their attention for the shot. Hold the toy or treat close to the camera lens so they look right where you need them to for the photo.

4. Check the light

Make sure your pet is evenly lit – no bright patches or dark shadows – these can really ruin a shot. Natural light is better than artificial light. Let the light in through as many windows as you can for indoor photography, or take your pet outside to enjoy the fresh air. Not too much sunshine though, taking photos of your dog in the shade is better than direct sunlight.

5. Have an assistant

Sometimes, having a second person to help can be useful. It can be a lot to juggle with the phone, plus a toy or treat. Let your friend or family member focus on getting your pup’s attention, while you take the perfect shot.

6. Focus on the eyes

They are the window to the soul, after all! Nothing brings out the character and connection with your pup like looking deep into their eyes. See tip 3 about helping your dog to look right at the camera.

7. Try different framing

Sometimes, including background items (furniture, trees, etc.) can really add to a shot. Sometimes a close up is the way to go. It’s time to get creative, try out a few ideas and see what works.

8. Have fun

If your pet is having a good time, you’ll get better photos! This is what it’s all about, stay relaxed, make it the best fun ever and your photography session will be a beautiful bonding session with your pup.

Big thank you to Abi from Abi B Photography for providing these easy photography tips to help you take great photos of your dog, just using your phone or camera. Feel welcome to share the results and tag @popartpuppydogs and @absbphotos on Instagram, or send the best one to me to turn into a beautiful pop art portrait.

Turn your pet photos into pop art

Follow Abi’s tips and you’ll be sure to get great photos of your pet very soon. There might even be one that you think would look awesome in pop art.

I had the pleasure of turning one of Abi’s professional photos of her darling dog Abe into a digitally illustrated work of pop art. She captured this super cool pose of Abe giving a high five, which was a perfect fit for my ‘pow’ background design — the makings of a very dynamic and unique portrait. See the result below in another of Abi’s stunning photos.

Abraham (aka: Abe) is a natural in front of the camera, and the subject of many of Abi’s photos. A total pro at modelling, we’ve booked him in for a pop art portrait — I can’t wait to turn one of Abi’s photos into an energetic pop art masterpiece.

Excitement!! I was back at the Dog Lovers Show Melbourne this year, after a few postponements (due to lockdowns) everything was back, an bigger than ever! Moving to a new venue at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention centre, nearly 32,000 dog lovers visited across the three days, and a good amount of pups were there too.

It was the best weekend, and by most successful show yet. I was there with all my pop art pups on display and launching my new mini pet portraits — my signature pet portraits you know and love, only smaller! I’ve had this idea for such a long time, to offer digital portraits and a polaroid photo print, and I’m happy to say they were 100% a hit at the Dog Lovers Show. You can order one online any time, get to my order form here.

Read on for my show highlights, and lots and lots of pups!

Set Up Day

Arriving early(ish) at the Melbourne Exhibition & Convention Centre, I got straight into assembling my display with the help of my mum. Months prior to a show, I spend time designing my stand, even mocking it up in Illustrator to make sure it’s going to look amazing. Well, we had to wing it a little bit this time because we were quick to realise some of the heavier canvases weren’t going to stick to the wall. Ah! Potential disaster if I didn’t have any puppy pop art on the walls, but luckily I was able to do a rearrange of the lighter prints on the walls and sit the heavy canvases on the table *phew*!

Mum was in charge of my new mini pet portrait display, which looked better than I ever imagined. And yes, I even have a Christmas tree, because you can also get a handmade frame to convert your mini print into an Xmas deco. Cool, right?

I’m thrilled with how it looked, so many beautiful pop art pups on display for all to see this weekend.

Day 1: Friday

First day of the show and it felt like the calm before the crowds. Being a work day and very sadly Melbourne’s west and other parts of Victoria were flooded which made the show on the quiet side.

So many beautiful dogs and their lovely people came by. First to visit was Cooper @mygoldencooper who got some pats and his custom mini pet portrait. My good friend @dobiejax dropped in, I haven’t seen Jax and his mum since the last Dog Lovers Show, it was wonderful to catch up after all these years and great to see they are doing well. Then I saw another friend and long time supporter of my art, the one-and-only, pop art king himself, @davethebeagle!

I made lots more new friends too — @puddlesthecavalier @dachofbear  @kaaju_the_cavapoo all came to say hello and have cuddles in the morning.

Very busy morning meeting lots of amazing people and their pups. A huge thank you to those who placed orders for my mini prints! I got so much praise for my cute new pet portrait size with some dogs (a bunny and a bird) all booked in.

The afternoon was just as eventful. This year I was super pleased to have Pop Art Pups Ambassadogs, the first of which was the beautiful @cavoodleisla who came with her mum @makinghouseahome__ and her dad. I had the best afternoon hanging out with them, and I love that our outfits were twinning too.

More friends dropped by, a big thank you to @mangoandbo @goldengirlruby_ @jaxandlulufrenchies @george_yorkielove @skippinggirl_shihtzus @herecomesyodapup and @frankiecmoodle for coming to see me. Loved to see you all!!

Day 2: Saturday

Busy and super fun day at the Dog Lovers Show, with many more people taking the day to come and check out the show. I loved talking with everyone about their pups and how I create my hand-illustrated artworks, referencing your photos.

I nearly didn’t make it on time as the trains were stopped in my area, near where the floods had impacted. I was on the bus hoping to get to the show in time, I just made it, coming in a couple of minutes before the doors officially opened.

Many more friends stopped by in the morning, the beautiful Penny from @penny.and.vinny.the.gsds got some cuddles, followed by Kaos @absolute_kaos1 who made my dreams come true with his famous selfie trick. Oh so fluffy Bentley and Barney from @bentley.theberner got some cuddles too and @puddlesthecavalier was back in style, rolling around the show in an awesome pram.

Lots more pups booked in for portraits too. I’m so grateful for the response to my new mini pet portraits, they were so popular and it was so lovely to hear the feedback about how great they would be as Christmas presents. You can’t go wrong with an adorable little portrait of your pup for xmas.

I had another wanter around the show, meeting some gorgeous greyhounds at the Amazing Greys rescue stand. They also had my dog mothers day cards for sale to support their rescue hounds.

The afternoon was full of more puppy visits, awesome people and pet portrait bookings of dogs which I’m so excited to draw! A huge thank you to @muppetandbear @bailey.thelabradoodle Frankie @george_yorkielove @herecomesyodapup and @presley.shih.tzu for coming by! We booked Presley in for a mini portrait as well, and he gave me one of the best moments of the show when he discovered a bean-bag for the first time. Instantly deciding this was the best thing ever and digging around, having so much fun.

Day 3: Sunday

Last day of the Dog Lovers Show and there was a puppy ambush at my display! Which is the absolute best kind of ambush. @mygoldencooper came by first to show off his awesome trick to get pats & treats, followed by a visit from the gorgeous @ruby_and_bailey_the_lowchens — then the surprise when @davethebeagle @howardandnedthegriffons and @thethingsofleon all dropped in on us together!! Beautiful @coffeethecavoodle stopped by to say hello too. Fair to say that it was the best morning ever.

Another busy busy day at the show, with more mini portraits booked in and some very cool custom portrait requests. Thank you to everyone who came by my stand, I really appreciate the compliments of my art and I loved talking to everyone about the pups they have at home.

Couldn’t have asked for a better end to the show than to see my BFF Lemmy the whippet! He did a brilliant job at being a Pop Art Pups Ambassadog and for his first time at the show. Thank you to his mum and dad for bringing Lemmy to visit me — loved seeing you all!

More friends @mangoandbo @presley.shih.tzu and @puddlesthecavalier popped by for one last cuddle. Mango showing off some super cute spins and Presley was back again for beanbag fun. I hope everyone had as much fun at the show as Presley had with his newfound love of digging in a beanbag.

And then it was over, packed up my pop art and went home to get some much needed sleep. I’ve got a full week ahead drawing all my show orders, so please keep an eye out for new puppy art soon!

While that’s a wrap for Dog Lovers 2022, me and my pop art pups will be out and about again soon. And you can always get your pup a pop art portrait anytime, click here to place your order!

Pop art puppy paintings are taking over the Dog Lovers Show! This year me and my pop art puppies were on show to the dog lovers of Melbourne and we had the best time. Here’s a wrap up of this amazing event including all the highlights and puppy dogs.

Set Up

My beautiful display upstairs at the show, I couldn’t be more pleased with the result. This is truely my heart and soul, up for all to see on a 3m wall – lots of colour and puppies and fairy lights!

I’m always grateful when the vision I have in my head is brought to life and even better when the result makes people smile. It’s the same feeling when I complete a pet portrait – very proud of the result and can’t wait to give it away to it’s owner so it makes them happy each time they look at it. Except for my display I’m showing it off to the dog lovers of Melbourne.

It was a long day, starting early at 9am. My mum helped me in the morning hanging paintings, she kept me very organised and my display started to come to life. As we did the set up last year everything ran rather smoothly (aside from a mid-day blutac shortage) but we must have learned a thing or two because the rest came together easily.

There are lots more artists at the show this year, which is great to see – I’m sharing the artists wall with some very talented individuals. It’s wonderful that the show supports pet portraiture as the more dogs and art in the world the better!

Day 1

We’re on Show! Day 1 of the Dog Lovers Show kicked off with some fun. I met so many gorgeous dogs and everyone was delighted with my colourful pop art!

We got to the show early to make sure everything was in order for the day. As dogs and dog lovers started making their way upstairs I was delighted when Tiki the Chow Chow and her mum El dropped by for a visit. Tiki is mother of @scar_the_chow and I’ll be creating a portrait of Tiki later this year too!

Instapooch @davethebeagle made himself very comfortable on his throne at my display and we were all seeing double as Dave has his very own pop art portrait up on my wall. Dave’s dropping past each day so be sure to catch him (and don’t forget to bring chicken!)

I’m in the best spot as a parade of dogs come past all the time as we are right near the adoption zone and breed clubs. Brie the Bull Arab and Mack the 6 month old Afghan Hound stopped by for a look at my art, then I found super cool @bangaz_dachshund and Moose hanging out at pat a pooch area.

I saw my friends at Greyhound Safety Net and went over to meet their hounds. A very friendly Greyhound named Amy decided she loved me so much that she would sit on me. Of course I didn’t mind and we took a selfie together.

Back at my display it’s lovely to listen to people’s compliments upon discovering me for the first time, I’m really glad my art makes people stop and smile. @the_adventures_of_jago stopped by to have a sit in the pop art throne – don’t tell Dave haha! Lovely to see you Jago!

We had a great view of the doga (dog yoga) demo from my vantage point upstairs over the main stage and then I went for another wander around the show and bumped into @dobiejax then saw @frankieandvelvetlove on the Instapooch stage. Both these pups will be appearing at my display over the weekend too! Then after chatting with the team from Pet Haus – we raced upstairs to catch up with superstar @squidthegriff and I scored a cuddle with him too.

More people and dogs came to my display including Pablo the Xoloitzcuintli, the smallest baby chihuahua Candis and Holly the Labrador.

Then day 1 was all over – we packed up our haul of treats and freebies for Finn & Budd and headed home to rest up for a big weekend ahead.

Day 2

Day 2 of the Dog Lovers Show and a huge Saturday crowd of dog lovers descended upon the Royal Exhibition Building Melbourne. Upstairs at my pop art display we had @davethebeagle back on his throne and today he brought along his friend – gorgeous fluffy cloud pup @hamishthespitz who had some cool tricks to swap for treats. Dave was quite content to sit on his cushion and accept all the chicken he could get his paws on.

More pups stopped by today to say hello. @scar_the_chow posed magnificently with his pop art portrait, I showed @bangaz_dachshund my beautiful doxie art and @dobiejax hung out for a while next to my pop art portrait of @khaleesi_thedobe – two gorgeous Doberman pups and insta friends together at the show.

Definitely a busy day on my pop art display, we got lots of entries to my show competition and sold a few of my new dog breed Illustration greeting cards. Getting a great response to the new drawings – I just need to get more breeds done! But the show was great inspiration showcasing many dog breeds, plus I’ve been taking votes on everyones favourite pups.

Many of my past and future clients were at the show today and it was lovely to see everyone. We had some great conversations about dogs I’ve painted and also dogs who are booked in for a portrait in the coming months! I adore hearing about your pups as I get to know them so well in the portrait process, thank you everyone so much for the updates.

When the show closed for the day, we went down to the exhibitors night where we could mingle over some drinks with all the exhibitors. It’s such a great event to catch up with friends in the industry and meet new friends too. Plus I met Bret the Lowchen pup from @wyntervalelowchen who amazed us with some of his tricks and Unicorn fur colouring.

Thanks for another amazing day at the show! Back home to bed and ready for the last day of the show.

Day 3

Day 3 – the final day of the Dog Lovers Show Melbourne. I arrived at the show to find the crowd waiting bigger than the day before! The weekend goes by so fast but I definitely made the most of today and had many more memorable experiences.

After quick visit with @trigger_trouble and the awesome Pet Haus crew on the way in, I arrived at my display to find Penny the most gorgeous chihuahua pup. The morning flew by and I was delighted to see more of my clients who have commissioned a portrait and met many new friends who stopped to admire my colourful puppy art.

The beautiful Molly the greyhound came to visit on her way to Greyhound Rescue Vic stand. I’ve previously painted Molly’s portrait so it was amazing to meet her in real life. Such a gentle hound and it was wonderful to catch up with her lovely mum and dad.

I was right in the middle of the action all day. We stopped traffic when the one and only instapooch @frankieandvelvetlove dropped by to take up the pop art throne, right under his very own pop art painting. He got lots of pats from everyone and we had heaps of fun posing for photos.

It wasn’t long until @davethebeagle arrived too get his share of pats and treats – a double dose of instapooch superstars! Somehow we coordinated a photo of all of us, it was so special to have these amazing pups on my display. Love these pups so much, thanks to their amazing mums for making the show so special.

In the final hours, I went for a walk to visit Molly, who was sleeping soundly after a big day and I stopped by the Chow Chow Club Vic to deliver @scar_the_chow’s mum his majestic pop art mug! Then it was all over. My parents helped to pack up the display and we headed home with my pop art pups, amazing memories of the weekend and lots of new art to create!

What a weekend! A huge thank you to everyone who made The Dog Lovers Show possible.

Last weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to spend the morning with beautiful Raven and Oscar.

Having just completed their hand painted pop art portrait, I asked their lovely mum Sam if I could drop by to deliver her artwork, as they live near me. My paintings travel all over the world and interstate to their homes so it’s actually rare that I meet the pups I paint in person. A big thank you to Sam for commissioning their portrait and welcoming me into your home for a visit.

To create a pet portrait I dedicate so much time to looking at your pup’s photos, getting to know their personality and painting their every detail. When the portrait is complete, I feel like I know each pup already even if I never get to meet them. It’s really something special to then meet them in person and realise I’ve captured their spirit and personality perfectly.

Jess visits dog Raven and Oscar to deliver their pop art portrait.

Full of energy I was greeted by bouncy Raven who managed to give me a kiss on the cheek while I was standing up! Oscar is a super soft cuddly cloud and a little less energetic than his sister, but so happy to accept much patting. Both super happy pups who live a life of luxury with heaps of room to play.

Plus I found out Oscar is an artist too – such an honour to have my painting hanging beside his paw print masterpiece.

A beautiful family who I’m very grateful to work with on this portrait. I hope it brings many smiles just like Raven and Oscar and their playful antics, which you can check out on their Instagram too – @batmantha_x.

If you think a pop art of your pets would be perfect for your home, find out more about commissioning a hand painted portrait.

Kyla the labradoodle is a pup who makes everyone’s life better around her. This is her beautiful story.

There’s so much to say about this gorgeous girl. Upon organising her portrait her brave mum Anja (who has given me permission to share their story) told me of the struggles she has with C-PTSD (Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and the love and support her incredible parents give her to overcome this condition.

The best medicine prescribed by her psychologist was a mental health assistance dog. Which was glorious news! However because of her work life, committing to a puppy, along with the intensive training required for Assistance Dog certification, wasn’t realistic.

Until her parents said they were willing to keep and train a dog for as long as necessary, then she can join Anja full time. With much relief and gratitude, sweet puppy Kyla entered their lives.

Life was transformed for Anja with Kyla by her side. But when it came time for them to move interstate, it was both a proud and sad goodbye for her parents who would not get to see them as often. In Anja’s words “I know they miss and love us both, but I think they miss Kyla more”

Anja commissioned this portrait for her parents “as a perfect reminder of the animal they love and the remarkable thing they’ve done for their daughter” – a truely special Christmas present. And I’m happy to report Kyla passed her Public Access Test with flying colours!

Their story continues – just follow Anja and Kyla on their Instagram @thekylachronicles

Kyla’s canvas print pet portrait is hanging in pride of place in Anja’s parents home.

Please allow me to introduce to you Snoop, Kosmo, Missy, Kato and Daisy with their lovely self-proclaimed crazy dog mum, D’Arhne.

This gorgeous family is why I love being a pet portrait artist so much. I’ve had the pleasure of working with D’Arhne to create very special portraits of all her pups since she first discovered my art back in 2016.

A true collector my pop art, her crazy puppy gallery showcases hand painted masterpieces, a group canvas print, bag, personalised dog ID tags and most recently a set of colourful mugs that make her smile everyday.

If you are anything like me as a dog parent, you spend most of your waking hours documenting everything your fur-babies do. Scroll though the photos on my phone and it would be hard for you to find one that doesn’t feature my pups, Finn and Budd. I’m sure I’m not the only one who is like this.

D’Arhne, mother of these five gorgeous dogs, is the talented pet photographer of Crazy Puppy Love Photography. With an eye for colour and amazing natural talent, D’Arhne captures beautiful photos of her pups and their friends from her location in Queensland, Australia.

I had the honour of turning some of her pet photography into works of Pop Art. And I made a time-lapse video about it! Such a fun bunch of pups to grace my easel.

Thank you D’Arhne for all your wonderful support of my art.
